TUESDAY 19 AUGUST

On Saturday the 16th,  La Porte des Indes vs OPG was a shocker of a match with La Porte setting the target at an impressive 168 for two with their captain Vickhyat scoring 89 runs.  OPG was unable to respond to the huge total loosing wickets at regular intervals but managed 64 for four in 10 overs. India unfortunately forfeited their game with Island Community Cricket Club, however, this did not stop the cricket with the umpires and organisers forming a team to play ICCC and scoring a very respectable 110, however this was not enough to beat ICCC but fun was indeed had by all!
On Sunday the 17th the first match was played between Ardent and Wiseman’s Cricket Club.  This was a must win game situation for both of the teams to qualify for the semi finals.  Ardent won the toss and elected to bat first scoring their highest run total in the tournament so far of 140 for two in ten overs, Deckence was Ardent’s star player with a magnificent 77 runs.  Wiseman’s scored a respectable 72 runs in 10 overs but this was not enough against the strong score piled up by Ardent.
The second match of the day was East London Community Cricket Club vs Bangladesh Community Cricket Forum UK.  This game was crucial for East London CCC to qualify for the semi finals but they could not counter the strength of the so far undefeated Bangladesh CCF who won the game with a margin of 35 runs scoring 117 runs in 10 overs after electing to bat first.  East London CCC did not have a strong enough attack and lost the match with a score of 82 for 6 in ten overs and are now out of the tournament.
This coming Saturday is the semi finals with the first match being played by Island CCC vs La Porte des Indes and the second match being Ardent vs Bangladesh CCF UK.

WEDNESDAY 13 AUGUST

After the excitement of the opening weekend, week two of Mahua Youth Project’s Super 8 Challenger Cup is guaranteed to set pulses racing, and will undoubtedly draw the spectators to the edge of the boundary until the last over!

Everything is still to play for, the next four matches deciding which teams will qualify for the semi finals. Island Community Cricket Club are the favourite from Group 1 winning both their matches however, with the points being so close nothing can be certain. Group 2 has exactly the same points pattern with Bangladesh Community Cricket Forum being the favourites, this is the weekend that the teams need to step their game up a gear whilst maintaining the fantastic sporting rapport present last weekend that has made The Super 8 Challenger Cup a sporting asset to the community.

Heavy rain is forecasted for Saturday and Sunday but this will not deter the spirit of the tournament for last Saturdays heavy rain did nothing to get in the way of the passion or will to win of the teams.

MONDAY 11 AUGUST

Last weekend Mahua Youth Project hosted the first matches of The Super 8 Challenger Cup in Victoria Park, a tournament the likes that east London has never seen before. The matches were fast paced and exciting with each side having just 10 overs to make their mark. The weather did not deter the eager teams and Saturday saw an incredibly high run count of 736 in just four matches.

Ardent vs India had a nail-biting last over with India needing to score 18 runs to win which they miraculously pulled off. OPG vs East London Community Cricket Club was a match that also had spectators on the edges of their seats with an impressive high score of 61 runs by Jumma Khan, unfortunately this was not enough to win the match.

Sunday also saw some very exciting cricket with teams changing their tactics. The score boards are still very even with everything to play for next weekend however the favourites from group one at this stage are Island Community Cricket Club and Bangladesh Cricket Forum UK from group two as both teams are the only ones to have won both their matches.
Next weekend will see the final matches in the group stages, tensions will be running high as teams will be competing to get through to the semi finals in the first tournament of The Super Challenger Cup.
